Trip Update - Monday, July 30, 2012 On the first morning, Sunday, the kids were pleasantly surprised to be awoken
to Kate singing ‘Good morning’ instead of Jonathan’s usual screeching wake up call. After everyone rolled
up their sleeping bags and got dressed, they ate muffins and bagels for breakfast. Then Jonathan sent the kids outside into
the cold to do devotionals and an hour later Jonathan yelled that it was time to get back in. The kids eagerly hurried into
the warm building and then made their way to the sanctuary for church. Jeffrey and Laura performed ‘Oh Praise Him’
by David Crowder Band during the offering. During the donuts and coffee that the church offered after the service, the youth
group mingled with the congregation. Afterwards, the youth ministry got ready to go to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Halfway there
they stopped at a park for a picnic lunch. The boardwalk was crowded, loud and a lot of fun. Some kids lined up to pay for
the tickets for the crazy rollercoaster rides, some headed straight for the ice cream and funnel cake, and some kids just
walked back and forth along the boardwalk. Everyone came back worn out from all the fun and a little bit sunburnt. After some
relax time, we were had lasagna for dinner. When everyone finished, we broke into our small groups to discuss the devotionals
from the morning. Later we met in the gym, the same place where we sleep, and sang worship songs and listened to Jonathan’s
sermon. Afterwards we enjoyed peach cobbler and homemade whipped cream. By eleven Jonathan was yelling at the kids to stop
giggling and go to sleep.
On Monday, July 30, 2012, we
cringed as Jonathan ‘sang’ “Oh Happiness’’ to wake us up. With the nails on the chalkboard like
voice still ringing in our ears, we packed up our sleeping stuff and ate pancakes and bacon. We changed into working clothes
and left with our small groups to go to different work projects. A few groups went to a church to paint parking lots, pick
blackberries, fix tables, build book shelves, and tore down a tree. At noon we were back home and eating grilled cheese sandwiches.
Our afternoon activity was a bowling with our small groups. The best part of the day though was when we finally got to shower
off. The boys and girls split into their bathrooms and waited in line with their shower buddy to get their chance to take
a cold shower for four minutes in one of the two showers (Editor’s note: the girls finished showers first and we are
fact checking the portrayal of Jonathan’s voice). Submitted by Kate Breding
Trip Update - Wednesday, August 1, 2012 On Tuesday July 31st , we awoke to “A
Leak in the Building”; a welcome change from Jonathan’s screeching. We reluctantly packed up our cozy sleeping
bags and went outside to do devotionals. When we returned, we had a delicious make-your-own breakfast burrito station waiting
for us. After breakfast, we went our separate ways to work projects, including building a barricade for an unsafe trail, splitting
wood, cleaning the church, weeding, and further hacking away at the blackberry bushes. Some highlights of the morning included:
Dan’s group tested the rumor that licking a banana slug makes your tongue numb (it does) and Skye’s/Casey’s
group enjoyed snacks provided by the church after slaving away on the blackberry bushes. When returning from our various projects,
we enjoyed chicken salad sandwiches accompanied by chips and veggies. Our surprise activity for the afternoon was the Santa
Cruz beach! Matt was turned into a mermaid by a crew of sand sculptors while swimming, playing games, and just laying out
in the sun filled the rest of our day. After taking a refreshing shower, we ate a yummy dinner of burritos, chips, and homemade
guacamole. We met with our small groups and then went to worship. In worship we sang songs, discussed our devotionals from
the morning, and watched the last Bedroom of the Day. Later, we enjoyed strawberry yogurt pie and fell into bed after a long,
fun day. Submitted by Leigh Houck
